My name is Danielle Whitfield. I’m forty-eight years old, a Black woman from Charlotte, North Carolina, and until eighteen months ago, I believed the worst thing my family could do was break my heart. I was wrong. Sometimes the people who know exactly how much you love somebody are the same people who figure out how to turn that love into a business. For eighteen months, I sent my younger sister, Kendra, four thousand dollars every single month to help care for our seventy-four-year-old mother. Seventy-two thousand dollars. I never missed a payment. Not once. Not when my car needed a new transmission. Not when my property taxes increased. Not when I canceled a vacation I had been planning for three years. Every month, on the first business day, four thousand dollars left my account. Kendra told me it was paying for Mom's caregivers, prescriptions, groceries, and household bills. And every month, she found another reason it wasn't enough. Then one Thursday afternoon, my mother reached across her kitchen table, wrapped her thin fingers around my wrist, and asked me a question that made my blood run cold. "Baby, did you stop paying those women who come to help me?" I stared at her. "What women, Mama?" "The ladies who help me bathe and clean up around here. Miss Odessa said she couldn't keep coming if she wasn't getting paid." I thought I had misunderstood. "Kendra said you had two caregivers coming every week." Mama looked at me with the kind of confusion that no mother should ever have to feel about her own children. "Danielle, honey, I haven't seen two caregivers in this house since last Christmas." Last Christmas had been almost ten months earlier. I pulled my phone from my purse, opened my banking app, and showed her the most recent transfer. Four thousand dollars.
