Horbury Bridge Viaduct: The Lost Railway Above Wakefield

Discover the fascinating history of Horbury Bridge Viaduct, a striking disused railway structure in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. In this video, I explore the history of the 17-arched viaduct, which once carried the Midland Railway's Royston to Thornhill line. Construction began in approximately 1902, and trains first used the viaduct in 1905. The impressive structure crosses the A642 Wakefield to Huddersfield road and stretches for approximately 310 yards. Built mainly from engineering brick, its distinctive arches remain an impressive reminder of the region's railway and industrial heritage. The railway began closing in sections in 1968, with the final section remaining open until August of that year to transport materials for the construction of the M1 motorway. Although the tracks were removed in 1969, Horbury Bridge Viaduct still stands as a remarkable reminder of West Yorkshire's railway past.
