We continue the Protoss campaign in StarCraft: Remastered with Mission 9 – Shadow Hunters, the penultimate mission of the campaign as the Protoss finally prepare to strike directly at the Zerg Cerebrates controlling the Swarm on Aiur.
After rescuing Tassadar from the Conclave in The Trial of Tassadar, the internal conflict that has divided the Protoss has reached a turning point.
There's still a much bigger problem to deal with.
The Overmind and the Zerg Swarm are still on Aiur.
Tassadar has known for some time that conventional Protoss attacks aren't enough to permanently destroy the Zerg Cerebrates. We've already seen them regenerate after being defeated, allowing them to continue controlling their Broods as if nothing happened.
But Zeratul and the Dark Templar can change that.
In Shadow Hunters, we finally get the chance to put their unique powers to use against the Swarm. Our objective is to protect Zeratul and help him reach the Cerebrates so that he can permanently destroy them.
After everything that's happened between the Protoss and Dark Templar, it feels like we've finally reached the moment Tassadar has been fighting for throughout much of this campaign.
The two sides need each other.
Gameplay-wise, this mission feels like the payoff to something we've known since the Zerg campaign.
Back on Char, we watched Zeratul kill Zasz, proving that Dark Templar energy could permanently destroy a Cerebrate. That attack had disastrous consequences when Zeratul's mind briefly connected with the Overmind and accidentally revealed the location of Aiur.
That mistake ultimately allowed the Zerg to invade the Protoss homeworld.
Now Zeratul has the chance to use that same power to help save it.
There's a nice sense of the story coming full circle here.
What I particularly like about this stage of the Protoss campaign is how much has changed since First Strike. At the beginning, the Protoss leadership believed their military strength and traditional methods would be enough to defeat the Zerg.
Nine missions later, everything is different.
Tassadar has defied the Conclave, Fenix has joined his cause, Jim Raynor has become an unlikely ally, and the once-exiled Dark Templar are now essential to defeating the Swarm.
All while the Overmind continues to strengthen its position on Aiur.
It also makes Zeratul one of the most interesting characters in the original StarCraft story. His attack on Zasz unintentionally helped bring the Zerg to Aiur, but without him and the Dark Templar, the Protoss may have no way of permanently eliminating the Cerebrates.
Now it's time to see whether that power can turn the battle in their favour.
With Shadow Hunters being Mission 9, we're officially at the penultimate mission of the Protoss campaign.
After playing through the entire Terran campaign, commanding the Zerg Swarm and now fighting to save Aiur as the Protoss, there's only one mission left before we reach the finale of the original StarCraft campaign.
The Cerebrates are vulnerable.
Zeratul knows how to kill them.
And it's time for the Dark Templar to go hunting.
