We pay tribute to DK Pattammal on her 16th remembrance day. Pattammal was a towering figure in Carnatic music and a pioneer whose voice resounded with bhakti, patriotism, and uncompromising classical depth. To honour her vast contribution, we share an intimate chamber concert from 1974, held at the Delhi Music Club, Gulmohar Park. Pattammal is joined by her brother, DK Jayaraman, a brilliant vocalist in his own right. The two often sang together, their voices blending with perfect understanding and shared musical values. The concert also features the powerful and sensitive accompaniment of Palghat Rajamani on the mridangam, son of the legendary Palghat Mani Iyer, upholding a rhythmic lineage of extraordinary finesse. Born in 1919, DK Pattammal broke barriers from an early age. At a time when women were discouraged from performing publicly, especially in the male-dominated world of Carnatic music, she rose as a torchbearer, giving her first concert in the early 1930s. Her repertoire was vast and scholarly, spanning from rigorous Ragam Thanam Pallavis to deeply moving Tamil compositions, particularly the fiery patriotic songs of Subramania Bharathi, which she made her own. She brought dignity, discipline, and depth to the concert stage and paved the way for generations of women artists to follow. Her music was marked by clarity of diction, precision of pitch, and a deep sense of bhakti never flamboyant, always rooted. As we remember Pattammal today, may this music remind us of her courage, purity of voice, and lifelong dedication to both art and nation.
