How the Mafia Secretly Ran an Entire Australian Town: Griffith
On 15 July 1977, a furniture retailer walked out of a Griffith pub and vanished. Donald Mackay wasn't just a shopkeeper. He was the one man in a town of 20,000 who said out loud what everyone could already see. A district where a farmer earning $399 a year built a $190,000 house.
But nobody was hiding anything. The town knew. Three Griffith detectives were later jailed for protecting the trade. In a car park behind the Hotel Griffith, police found his locked van, his keys underneath it, and three spent cartridges on the ground.
Today, a marble bust stands on Banna Avenue where a grave should be. This is the story of how a town watched, and what knowing without acting costs.
This is not just the story of Griffith. It's the story of what silence buys.
