Poor circulation in the legs after 60 — cold feet, swollen ankles, that heavy feeling
by evening — is almost always met with the same advice: walk more. That advice isn't
wrong. It's incomplete. In this video, retired family physician Dr. Robert Hale
explains the one muscle that decides whether blood gets from your feet back up to your
heart, and five simple movements that switch it on.
You'll also learn something most videos on this subject get wrong: swelling from a vein
problem and cramping from an artery problem are two different conditions, they feel
different, and they need different things from your doctor. Getting that distinction
right matters — including for whether compression stockings are right for you at all.
The video covers how the calf muscle pump works, what changes after 60, the five
movements counting down from five to one, and exactly how to do each of them. It ends
with the questions to take to your next appointment, and the symptoms that need
attention promptly rather than eventually.
⚠️ IMPORTANT
This is general health education from a retired physician — not personal medical
advice. Do not start these exercises if one leg has recently become swollen, painful,
warm or red — that combination needs a doctor first, not exercise. Ask your doctor
before using compression stockings; they are not right for everyone, and can be the
wrong thing with significant artery narrowing. Never stop or adjust a prescription
based on a video.
