I left Melaka yesterday intending to cycle all the way to Muar, but the heat, a long series of unexpected stops, and my habit of investigating anything that catches my eye had other ideas. After failing to find an affordable place to stay in Merlimau, I ended up sleeping on a battered sofa at a local fishing jetty. It turned out to be a pretty good place to spend the night, and this morning I'm back on the road with a much bigger historical question on my mind: what did it actually look like when Sultan Mahmud Shah and his followers fled Melaka after the Portuguese captured the city in 1511?
I'm following the coast as much as possible rather than taking the main highway, trying to imagine the journey made by the defeated Malay sultan, his royal entourage, soldiers, and the many ordinary people who fled alongside them. The more I investigate, the more complicated the story becomes. Thousands of people may have been moving through this region, crossing rivers, negotiating mangrove swamps and mudflats, and trying to stay ahead of the Portuguese. How did they manage it all, especially with such a large group of people? And what would the journey have looked like on the ground? I have plenty of questions and not nearly enough answers.
First, though, there's the small matter of getting myself to Muar in the Malaysian heat. My unexpected overnight accommodation comes with electricity, a fan, a proper shower, and a community of fishermen who seem determined to make sure I've eaten breakfast. I get a glimpse of their daily routines, become thoroughly confused by the local terminology for iced coffee, and start to wonder whether these little fishing jetties along Malaysia's west coast might be some of the best places to stop when travelling by bicycle. They're informal social clubs as much as working harbours, and I could happily spend a lot longer getting to know them.
Along the way, I investigate a traditional heritage house in Merlimau, discover a rather questionable bridge crossing between Melaka and Johor, and take a few detours that probably don't help my progress. But the historical thread keeps drawing me south. Muar was an important stopping point in the story of the Melaka Sultanate's retreat, and it was here that Sultan Mahmud Shah is said to have established a defensive position after crossing the river. I want to find the site for myself, even if the information available online leaves a lot to be desired.
Eventually, I reach Muar and track down Kubu Bentayan, the historic site associated with that retreat. Today, it's tucked away inside a bus station complex, with little more than a marker to explain its significance. Standing there, I'm left trying to picture the people who arrived here more than 500 years ago, and how much of their story we can actually reconstruct from the surviving evidence. Sometimes following history means finding a grand monument. Sometimes it means finding a sign beside a bus station and having to use your imagination.
