On July 8, 1497, four fragile wooden ships cast off from Lisbon into the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. Their orders from King Manuel I were nearly impossible: sail further into the southern ocean than any European before them, round the dreaded Cape of Storms, cross the uncharted Indian Ocean, and establish a sea route to the legendary spice markets of India. Over the next fourteen months, Vasco da Gama and his 170-man crew faced brutal scurvy outbreaks, hostile encounters in Mozambique and Mombasa, an astonishing 23-day sprint across the Arabian Sea guided by a master monsoon pilot, and a perilous audience before the Zamorin of Calicut. When negotiations collapsed into suspicion, the Portuguese found themselves surrounded in the harbor by seventy armed war vessels in a deadly naval standoff. This is the complete, uninterrupted documentary of the outbound expedition—faithfully reconstructed from the surviving 15th-century first-voyage journal (traditionally attributed to Álvaro Velho). ══════════════════════════════════════════════ TIMESTAMPS & DOCUMENTARY CHAPTERS ══════════════════════════════════════════════ 00:00 — Documentary Prologue: The Mission to India 00:05 — ACT I: Lisbon — The Departure 01:25 — Route Map: Lisbon to Cape Verde & Atlantic 01:29 — ACT II: The South Atlantic — The Great Volta do Mar 02:50 — Route Map: Atlantic Loop to Southern Africa 02:54 — ACT III: The Devil's Sea — Rounding the Cape 04:15 — Route Map: Rounding Cape of Good Hope to East Africa 04:19 — ACT IV: East Africa — The Swahili Coast 05:40 — Route Map: Mozambique to Mombasa & Malindi 05:44 — ACT V: Malindi — Pilot of the Monsoon 07:05 — Route Map: Setting Sail into the Open Arabian Sea 07:09 — ACT VI: The Arabian Sea — Monsoon Crossing 08:30 — Route Map: Landfall at Kappad Beach & Calicut 08:34 — ACT VII: Calicut — The Zamorin's Court 09:38 — Route Map: Escaping Calicut to Anjediva Island 09:42 — ACT VIII: The Break with Calicut — Ambush & Escape 11:03 — Outro: The Return Voyage Ahead & Credits ══════════════════════════════════════════════ PRIMARY HISTORICAL SOURCE ══════════════════════════════════════════════ Primary Narrative Source: "A Journal of the First Voyage of Vasco da Gama, 1497–1499" (Roteiro da primeira viagem), translated and edited by E. Every scene, navigational route, coastal encounter, hostage exchange, and character (including Diogo Dias, Paulo da Gama, and the mysterious Gaspar da Gama) is reconstructed directly from late 15th-century historical records.
