What EMT School Doesn’t Prepare You For

Passing your EMT class is one thing. Walking into your first call is another. On this episode of the Off Shift Podcast, host Shaun Pitts sits down with his former partner Nathan Dennison, a lieutenant-paramedic with 23 years in EMS. There’s no script or planned agenda—just two longtime providers answering live viewer questions about the job, the mistakes they see, and what they wish more people understood before getting on the truck. They get into why you’re never “just an EMT,” what to do when you don’t know what you’re doing, and why acting confident isn’t the same as being competent. Nathan also shares what rural ambulance work and six years working in corrections taught him about talking to people, reading a scene, and keeping his own reactions in check. In this episode: • Your first shifts: knowing your equipment, asking for help, and leaving the ego behind • Rural EMS, interfacility transport, and volunteering—and what you can learn before chasing the busiest truck • Going to paramedic school: “zero to hero,” choosing a program, and knowing whether you’re ready • Their takes on EMT scope of practice, hands-on assessment, and the way we train new providers Pasted markdown • Difficult calls, second-guessing yourself, and supporting your family while they support you Pasted markdown • Working with law enforcement, evaluating patients in custody, and keeping disagreements away from the patient ⚠️ This episode includes strong language and discussion of traumatic calls, patient death, and provider mental health. 🎓 Keep your certs current without the boring lectures.
