Why don't I feel like I matter in my relationship? You may know that your partner loves you and still feel unimportant, unheard, overlooked, rejected, or emotionally disconnected. Sometimes the question becomes even more personal: Why don't I feel important to my partner? Why does it hurt so much when my partner doesn't listen? Why do I need reassurance that I matter? In this UNpsych Network relationship podcast, psychologist Dr. John Slate explores why someone can feel as though they don't matter in a relationship even when love is present. You'll learn how seemingly small experiences can acquire much larger emotional meanings, how present relationship experiences can touch older wounds, and how the belief “I don't matter” can begin affecting the way couples communicate and respond to one another. Your partner looks at a phone while you're talking. You reach for affection and receive little response. You try to explain that you're hurt and the conversation turns into an argument. You want to spend time together, but there never seems to be enough room in the schedule. The individual event may seem small, but what happens inside us can be much larger. I'm not important. I'm not being heard. I'm not loved. I'm not enough. I can't depend on you. When experiences like these happen repeatedly, they can begin to feel like evidence that you don't matter. Present experiences can also touch older meanings involving rejection, abandonment, criticism, loneliness, or not feeling good enough. Eventually, we may react not only to what our partner did, but to what we believe that behavior means about us and the relationship. This podcast also explores the protective patterns that can develop around those feelings. One partner may seek reassurance, become critical, pursue the conversation, or react more intensely. The other may become defensive, overwhelmed, emotionally distant, or shut down. What begins as an attempt to protect ourselves can unintentionally create even more disconnection. The UNpsych approach helps you: UNcover the experiences and triggers connected to “I don't matter.” UNderstand the deeper emotional needs and meanings underneath your reaction. UNlearn protection patterns that may be creating more distance between you. Become more intentional about creating relationship experiences that communicate, “You matter to me.” You'll also learn the S.T.A.Y. approach for creating new connection experiences: S— Slow the Moment T— Track the Pattern A — Attach New Meanings Y — Your Next Move Matters The goal isn't simply to tell yourself that you matter. It is to recognize the experiences that taught you otherwise, understand the patterns those experiences created, and begin creating new experiences that tell a different story.
