What if you found $1 million in cash? In this animated what if story, you find a duffel bag with 10,000 hundred-dollar bills in a Brooklyn parking garage. But finding money and owning money are two very different things. Here's what really happens, step by step, under real US money laws. You try to deposit it, and the bank has to report it. Your friend suggests smaller deposits, which is a federal crime called structuring. You try to buy a car with cash, and the dealer has to report it too. Then you discover New York's found property law: you have 10 days to report it, the police can hold it for 3 years, and if you ever get it, the IRS treats it as taxable income. And somebody in a black car is looking for that bag. 0:00 The Bag 0:43 The Bank Teller 1:21 The Loophole 2:06 The 10-Day Law 2:50 The Black Car 3:36 Mom's Question 4:11 The Call 5:31 The Claim 5:57 Your Turn 💵 The real money rules in this story: 10,000 $100 bills = $1,000,000, and every US bill weighs about 1 gram, so the bag weighs about 22 pounds (US Bureau of Engraving and Printing). Banks must file a Currency Transaction Report for cash transactions over $10,000 in one business day. Large cash deposits are legal; they're just reported (FinCEN). Splitting deposits to avoid that report is called structuring, and it's a federal crime (FinCEN). Businesses that receive over $10,000 in cash generally file Form 8300 (IRS). In New York, found property must generally be reported to the police within 10 days, and property worth $5,000 or more is held for 3 years (NY Personal Property Law §§252-253). Found-property rules vary by state. Found money you keep counts as taxable income in the year it becomes undisputedly yours (IRS Publication 525). This is a fictional story built on real rules. It's not legal or tax advice. Would you report the bag before day ten? And if nobody claimed it, would you keep it? Tell me in the comments.
