In 1853, four American warships sailed into Edo Bay, and a closed, feudal island nation was forced to face the modern world. Within fifty years, Japan had built railways, factories and a modern navy, and defeated a European great power at sea. It then built an empire, waged a catastrophic war, and lost almost everything in 1945, only to rise again and become the world's second-largest economy.
How did it happen? And why did Japan's rise come to such a sudden halt, not once but twice?
In this documentary, we unfold the story: the Tokugawa shogunate and the closed country, Commodore Perry's Black Ships, the Meiji Restoration, the wars with China and Russia, the road to World War II, the postwar economic miracle of Toyota, Sony and the bullet train, the bubble of the 1980s, the lost decades, and Japan today.
