What Do You Think? | The Parable of the Two Sons | Matthew 21:28–32 | Christian Scripture Song
What matters more: promising to obey God, or actually doing what He commands?
“But what think ye? A certain man had two sons.” — Matthew 21:28 (KJV)
“What Do You Think?” explores Jesus Christ's challenging parable of the two sons, recorded in Matthew 21.
A father tells his first son to work in the vineyard. The son initially refuses, but afterward changes his mind and goes. The father makes the same request of his second son, who respectfully answers that he will go — but never does.
Jesus then asks which son did the will of his father.
The answer exposes the difference between words and actions, outward religion and genuine repentance.
SCRIPTURE FOUNDATION
Matthew 21:28–32 — Jesus tells the parable of the two sons and challenges the religious leaders over their response to John the Baptist's message.
Matthew 7:21 — Jesus warns that saying “Lord, Lord” is not the same as doing the will of His Father.
Luke 6:46 — Jesus asks why people call Him Lord but do not do what He says.
James 1:22 — Be doers of the Word, not hearers only.
Ephesians 2:8–10 — We are saved by grace through faith, not by works; believers are created in Christ Jesus for good works.
THE MESSAGE
The first son began with disobedience but changed course. The second son sounded obedient, but his promise was empty.
Jesus applied this parable to religious leaders who did not believe John the Baptist's call to righteousness, even after seeing others repent.
The parable calls every listener to examine whether professed faith is reflected in a changed response to God's Word.
We cannot earn salvation through good deeds or transform our hearts through willpower. We need the mercy of God, salvation through Jesus Christ, and the work of the Holy Spirit.
But genuine faith must not be reduced to words. Jesus calls us to repent, believe, and follow Him as Lord.
For anyone who has made promises and failed, this passage also offers a reason to turn back. The first son's initial refusal was not the end of his story.
What do you think?
Are we only saying the right things — or responding to our Father in faithful obedience?
