On the morning of April 6, 1944, a car and two trucks pulled up outside a children's home in the French village of Izieu, where 44 Jewish children were sitting down to breakfast. That evening, the Gestapo chief in Lyon sent a telex reporting the home cleared and signed it himself: Klaus Barbie. Not one of the children came home. Barbie lived another 47 years — 32 of them in South America, under a false name, on papers the American army helped him get. It took a German woman, a man whose father died at Auschwitz, and the mothers of Izieu to bring him to trial.
