How do you measure the thermal conductivity of thin films, coatings, membranes, and thermal interface materials?
In this video, Dr. Genesis Infante explains how the Transient Plane Source (TPS) Thin Film Utility is used to measure through-plane thermal conductivity in materials that are too thin for conventional bulk testing. The method uses a double-sided spiral sensor and analyzes the resulting transient temperature response.
The TPS Thin Film Utility can be used for materials including polymer films, protective and barrier coatings, adhesive layers, membranes, separators, and thin thermal interface materials (TIMs).
The method supports films as thin as approximately 10 µm and materials with thermal conductivity up to approximately 5 W/m·K, allowing samples to be tested at their intended operating thickness rather than stacking multiple layers or creating artificially thick specimens.
Dr. Infante also discusses why direct thin-film measurements matter for thermal stack modeling, coating comparison, quality control, and battery thermal management, including the example of an insulating film between neighboring battery cells.
The video also covers sample preparation requirements, measurement uncertainty, temperature capabilities, and the information included in the final thermal conductivity test report.
