DJ Screw “Soldiers United for Cash” documentary (2001) Subscribe →    / su4c   This rare footage from the "Soldiers United for Cash" documentary of DJ Screw making a Screw tape (mixtape) was recorded October 29, 2000 in DJ Screw's new studio in Houston, TX, and shows DJ Screw (Robert E. Davis, Jr.) doing what he did best, mixing records on the turntables. After recording his mixes,he would slow down the pitch, while replicating them onto 100 minute grey Maxell cassettes, called Screw tapes. Screw's signature sound has become its own sub-genre of hip hop, known as Screwed & Chopped or Chopped & Screwed music, which has influenced music and culture globally. DJ Screw was awarded a Justo Mixtape award for his impact. He flew out to New York to accept his award, a gold ring with a diamond cassette tape on it, which he calls his "Ghetto Grammy" in the video. The "Soldiers United for Cash" documentary remains a time capsule of Texas music history; a feature-length documentary with DJ Screw telling his story in his own words, showcasing his skills as a DJ, and introducing the Screwed Up Click. Long Live DJ Screw and all of the members of the Screwed Up Click who have passed away. Their influence and sound still lives on today.
