"When did we begin holding on more tightly to the things that point to God than to God Himself?"
Gideon's ephod, the bronze serpent, the Ark of the Covenant, the Sabbath...
Throughout Scripture, the very things God once used repeatedly became objects of misplaced devotion over time. People claimed to believe in God, yet gradually placed their trust not in Him, but in visible symbols and religious forms.
But this is not merely the story of ancient Israel.
This song asks whether our faith today has also become attached to names, traditions, dates, buildings, numbers, success, and spiritual experiences—while losing sight of the God to whom they were meant to point.
Like those who stare at the finger pointing to the moon, yet never see the moon itself.
It reflects on humanity's ancient desire to cling to what can be seen, and reminds us that true faith begins when we trust the invisible God beyond our fears.
May this song become a small invitation to look beyond the finger—and once again behold the Light it points toward.
