Silver eel weir complex on the Lower River Bann at Kilrea, October 2016. These weirs are used to capture silver eels migrating downstream on their way to the Sargasso Sea. This weir complex is located downstream of the main silver eel weir on the River Bann at Toome. The Toome weir catches over 60% of the annual eel catch on the Lower River Bann, but in years of prolonged low flow in autumn over 50% of the silver eel catch may be caught at Kilrea, having by-passed Toome. There is another silver eel weir at Movanagher further downstream of Kilrea. Commercial eel fishing on the lower Bann is undertaken by the Lough Neagh Fisherman's Co-op under the Neagh/Bann River Basin Eel Management Plan. The poor water quality on the Lower River Bann is apparent in this video. The video was shot using a Phantom 3 Advance.
