Bobby Knight — What Was Wrong With Me? | Sessions on the Green®

Bobby Knight — What Was Wrong With Me? | Sessions on the Green® “What Was Wrong With Me?” looks back on a childhood shaped by rigid expectations, punishment and the bewildering experience of being told repeatedly that failing to conform meant something was wrong. Set against imposing school corridors, bells, lines, black gowns and uncompromising rules, the song follows a boy whose restless, questioning mind simply could not become what the institution demanded. As the years pass, the perspective changes. What once seemed like personal failure is reconsidered with the understanding that being different did not mean being defective. The lyric also turns unexpectedly toward the adults who inspired fear, wondering whether their own childhood experiences might have shaped the authority they later exercised. Musically, the song is measured mid-tempo soul-rock, driven by melodic bass, live drums and rhythmic piano, with distant Hammond and expressive clean electric guitar adding space and emotional weight. Bobby Knight’s heavily weathered baritone-tenor is central to the recording: vulnerable even in its quietest moments, reinforcing the lyric’s emotional honesty. The final chorus brings release without triumphalism. Instead, it offers the understanding the boy had needed all along: room, respect and somebody willing to see him as he was.
