Today's goal: find some monkeys and stay overnight in a national park!
The journey to Ko Ang Thong National Park from Samui started with a large boat, then a longtail ferried everyone over to the island. I managed to pay cash to secure one of only four bungalows on the island, and I was the only foreigner staying!
Once my tour left and other day trippers passed through, I was left to my own devices for the rest of the day. I explored my eight sleeper bungalow and settled in. I then tackled the 500 metre ascent jungle trail (Pho Hun Jars Nature Trail), which offered five amazing viewpoints. Still no monkeys at this point.
Just before the last tourist boat left, I walked to the edge of the beach and felt like something was watching me. And it was! I'd found the island's dusky leaf monkeys, or perhaps they'd found me. They were so high in the trees that I could sometimes see the branches move unnaturally, and then a little head would pop up. It was incredible.
The downsides? No Wi-Fi apart from the main visitor centre, and electricity is only on from 6 PM to 9 PM. But honestly, it's worth it for this experience.
