Budj Bim: The 6,600-Year-Old Engineering Marvel Hiding in Plain Sight Somewhere in the volcanic country of south-west Victoria, there's a system of stone channels and fish traps older than Stonehenge, older than the pyramids of Giza — and it's still there today, built and maintained by the same people who built it in the first place. In this episode of Ancient Aussie History we tell the real story of Budj Bim, one of the world's oldest known aquaculture engineering systems. We cover the Budj Bim volcano (Mount Eccles) and its eruption roughly 37,000 years ago, the Gunditjmara people's documented presence in the region for at least 32,000 years, and the aquaculture channel and weir system itself, dated to at least 6,600 years old, engineered to manage short-finned eel migration at scale. We look at the archaeological evidence for stone house foundations and settled village life, directly contradicting the old "purely nomadic" framing of Aboriginal Australia that once underpinned the doctrine of terra nullius. Then we cover the site's UNESCO World Heritage listing in July 2019, the harder history that came before it — the Eumeralla Wars, the Lake Condah Mission, and decades of dispossession — and the Gunditjmara people's native title recognition in 2007 and 2011.
