In late 1967, a young singer named Maggie brought home a cream-colored portable record player from a secondhand music shop. The machine came with no manual. No manufacturer information. Only a pair of heavy green headphones and one unlabeled psychedelic record. When Maggie placed the record on the turntable, she noticed something standing where the center label should have been. Four musicians. A guitarist. A bass player. A drummer. And a female singer wearing the same clothes, hairstyle and headphones as Maggie herself. They were impossibly small. But they were moving. Before Maggie lowered the needle, the drummer counted four. The band began to play. The green headphone cable did not connect to the record player. Instead, it appeared to continue downward toward the miniature singer standing on the record. She wore an identical pair of headphones. Every time Maggie removed hers, the tiny band stopped. Every time she put them back on, the performance continued. Over the following nights, the incident became stranger. The tiny singer began standing between the grooves. The needle moved without ever touching the band. The record slowly increased in size. A drummer appeared directly beneath the stylus. The Pink Curtain Club appeared inside the vinyl surface. And the miniature musicians began moving toward the outer edge of the record as though they intended to leave. By the final night, Maggie no longer believed she was listening to a recording. She believed she was listening to another room. At approximately four in the morning, four tiny sets of footprints appeared beside the player. They crossed the carpet. They reached the door. Then they stopped. The following morning, the record had returned to normal size. The musicians were gone. The green headphones were still connected.
