Mikhail Tal vs Vasily Smyslov, played in Round 8 of the 1959 Candidates Tournament, features a queen sacrifice that begins with a simple question: what should you do when your queen is attacked?
Smyslov had defended Tal’s attack well and the position was still roughly balanced. But after 18...Nf6, Black attacked Tal’s queen on h5 with what looked like a completely natural developing move.
Instead of moving the queen, Tal played 19.Qxf7!!, deliberately placing it where Black’s rook could capture it.
Smyslov first inserted 19...Qa1+, forcing Tal’s king to d2, and only then accepted the sacrifice with 20...Rxf7. But Tal had calculated the entire sequence. After 21.Nxf7+ Kg8 22.Rxa1, Black’s queen disappears as well, leaving Tal with a favorable material balance and a winning position.
What makes this game especially instructive is that Tal faces the same problem twice: his queen is attacked, but the strongest response is not to move it immediately.
In this video, you’ll learn:
• Why 15...Nh5 does not force Tal to move his queen immediately
• How 16.Nh6+! uses a forcing check before dealing with the attacked queen
• Why Smyslov could still defend before 18...Nf6
• How 18...Nf6 attacks Tal’s queen but creates a tactical opportunity
• Why 19.Qxf7!! works even though Black can capture the queen
• How the intermediate 19...Qa1+ changes the move order
• Why 21.Nxf7+ is the critical check that makes the combination work
• How Tal emerges from the sequence an exchange ahead
The practical lesson is simple:
When your queen is attacked, do not automatically ask where the queen should move. First look for checks, captures, and other forcing moves. Sometimes you can deal with the attack later. And sometimes, as Tal showed against Smyslov, the queen does not need to survive at all.
