Her three daughters-in-law—Komal, Radha, and Maya—have come into the small hut situated amidst their fields. Inside the tiny hut, space is so scarce that belongings are stacked high, piled one atop another; the mother-in-law, Shakuntala, and her daughter, Chhutki, sit huddled in a corner. Meanwhile, the three daughters-in-law are cooking over the earthen stove built in another corner of the hut, wiping the sweat from their brows with the ends of their sarees. Komal (25) (Wiping her sweat): "Radha, watch out... you're going to bump into Maaji with your foot." Radha (25) (Irritated): "Oh, Didi, where am I supposed to move? There’s a wall behind me, the stove in front, and piles of stuff on the side. How are eight of us supposed to fit into this single room?" Maya (25) (Sadly): "Oh, look at poor Chhutki; she can't even find a quiet corner just to study. And at night, when the three brothers return from their daily labor, where are we supposed to sleep? Piled up on top of one another?" Shakuntala (55) (Somberly): "I used to manage just fine in this little corner near the old stove, but now that the three of you have arrived... the very walls of this house feel like they're closing in on us." Narration: Just then, Komal lights the stove. The stove is situated right next to the doorway. As soon as the smoke begins to rise, the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law sitting inside begin to cough. At that very moment, Maya is chopping vegetables; her hand accidentally brushes against Radha, and the vegetables tumble onto the floor. Radha (25): Annoyed // "Oh, for heaven's sake! Maya, watch out!" Maya (25): Sheepishly // "Watch what, Didi? There isn't even enough room here to swing my arms—how am I supposed to chop vegetables? It feels less like we're in a kitchen and more like we're locked inside a cage." Komal (25): Distressed // "The smoke is stinging my eyes, Maaji... In this scorching tin shack, even breathing has become a struggle." Shakuntala (55): Sadly // "What can we do, my daughters-in-law? This isn't truly our home; it is merely a favor granted by the moneylender. We must make do with it exactly as it is." Chhutki (18): Restless // "Mom, it feels so suffocating today; come on, let's go outside." Shakuntala (55): Sadly // "Child, the sun outside is spewing fire, and the hot winds are blowing fiercely. If we step out in weather like this, we might well lose our lives. Radha, dear, could you please fetch me a glass of water?" Radha (25): Calmly // "Yes, Maaji." Narration: Radha walks over to the earthen pot to fetch the water, but upon looking inside... Radha (25): Shocked // "Oh, what is this? There isn't a single drop of water left in the pot! Even the water we needed for cooking has run out. What are we going to do now?" Komal (25): Calmly // "Well then, let's go fetch some water first." Narration: The three daughters-in-law place the earthen pots upon their heads and head toward the village well. As they pass by, the village women standing along the way begin to gossip amongst themselves. Phoolan (40): With a sneer // "Oh, good heavens—look what I've just laid eyes on! Those are the very daughters-in-law who live in that tiny little shack on the moneylender's fields. The poor things must be absolutely miserable cooped up in such a cramped space during this scorching heat!" Rangili (40): Mockingly // "Oh, yes! Just yesterday, my husband was telling me that the neem tree standing right outside their house—the one situated smack-dab in the middle of the fields—well, their husband actually had to sleep right there beneath it last night!"
