Welcome to Earth Incident where we uncover the world's most powerful natural disasters, extreme weather events, volcanic eruptions, and the moments when the Earth changes everything in seconds. On May 18, 1980, at 8:32 AM, Mount St. Helens in Washington was struck by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that triggered the collapse of the volcano's unstable north flank. The resulting debris avalanche became the largest landslide in recorded history, followed by a devastating lateral blast that accelerated to at least 300 miles per hour and destroyed approximately 230 square miles of forest. Within minutes, the summit had been transformed. 1,314 feet of the mountain disappeared, forests were flattened, Spirit Lake was overwhelmed by debris, lahars raced through river valleys, and an enormous ash column climbed more than 15 miles into the atmosphere. USGS estimates that about 540 million tons of ash were carried across more than 22,000 square miles during the eruption. The human cost was devastating. 57 people were killed or remain missing, including USGS volcanologist David Johnston, whose final radio transmission became one of the most remembered moments of the eruption. This cinematic documentary follows the warning signs, the growing volcanic bulge, the catastrophic collapse at 8:32 AM, the sideways explosion, the ash cloud, the lahars, the destruction surrounding Mount St. Helens, and the lasting scientific lessons from one of the most important volcanic disasters in American history. mount st helens eruption / mount st helens 1980 / mount st helens eruption 1980 / volcanic eruption 1980 / washington volcano eruption / washington state volcano / volcanic disaster documentary / natural disaster documentary / volcano documentary / mount st helens explained / what happened at mount st helens / how mount st helens erupted / may 18 1980 / may 18 1980 eruption / mount st helens eruption explained TIMESTAMPS 00:00 — The Morning Mount St. Helens Exploded 00:30 — The Mountain Awakens 01:30 — May 18, 1980 — 8:32 AM 02:25 — The Sideways Explosion 03:25 — “Vancouver!
