How did James Rouse turn 14,000 acres of Howard County, Maryland, into Columbia—one of America's most ambitious planned communities? This is the fascinating history of how Columbia, Maryland was built, why it was designed so differently, and whether Rouse's vision actually worked.
In the early 1960s, thousands of acres of Howard County farmland were quietly being purchased. Rumors spread about what was coming. But the real plan was something few people expected: developer James Rouse wanted to build an entire city from scratch between Baltimore and Washington, DC.
And less than four years after announcing his plans, the first residents were moving in.
In this video, we explore the surprising story behind Columbia, Maryland, including:

Why does Columbia's history matter if you're thinking about living here?
Because the way Columbia was designed still affects everyday life—and real estate—throughout the community. From the differences between Columbia's villages to its housing options, parks, pathways, shopping areas, and downtown development, many things that make Columbia distinctive were intentional decisions made more than 60 years ago.
I'm Scott Moran, a local real estate agent serving Howard County and Central Maryland. I make videos about local communities, housing, real estate, development, and what it's actually like to live in this part of Maryland.
