The Giant That Greek Warriors Feared the Most

Who was Polyphemus, the terrifying One-Eyed Cyclops from Homer's Odyssey? Was he just a man-eating giant, or did Homer create him as a powerful symbol of barbarism, ignorance, and lawlessness against Greek civilization? In the first episode of Odyssey Universe, we explore the complete story of Polyphemus — son of Poseidon — and his legendary encounter with Odysseus in Book 9 of The Odyssey. We uncover the meaning behind his single eye, his hatred for the laws of Xenia (hospitality), and why blinding him cost Odysseus 10 years at sea. We also compare Polyphemus with similar one-eyed figures from world mythology: Sindbad's Giant from One Thousand and One Nights, Balor of the Evil Eye from Celtic myth, Kabandha from the Ramayana, Odin from Norse myth, and the symbolic concept of Dajjal. Odyssey Universe is a documentary series exploring Greek mythology through history, philosophy, and archaeology.
