In 1942, the U.S. government cleared about 59,000 acres of East Tennessee farmland and built a city that appeared on no map. By 1945 it held roughly 75,000 people, and most of them had no idea what they were making.
This is the story of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the "Secret City" of the Manhattan Project. We cover:
• How the Clinton Engineer Works was chosen, named, and sealed behind seven guarded gates
• Why the project was split into tiny pieces so almost nobody saw the whole picture
• The 1,152 calutrons at Y-12, wound with 14,700 tons of silver borrowed from the U.S. Treasury
• The young "Calutron Girls" who outproduced trained physicists without knowing what their dials measured
• The segregated housing and the plywood hutments that the official story rarely mentions
• How tens of thousands of workers learned the truth in August 1945, and why the gates stayed closed until 1949
