Six Minutes: Grade 6 Math, Part 34: Reporting Data and Its Context and Choosing the Right Measure: Statistics and Probability: 6.SP.5a, 6.SP.5b; then Choosing the Right Measure A data report must describe who was measured, what was measured and in what units, when and where, and how the data was collected, including the sample size. It should also name the variable it measures. Then: When data is skewed or has an outlier, the median and interquartile range describe it better than the mean and range. This episode shows how to read the shape of a data set and pick the matching measures, then verify the choice by recomputing without the outlier. A class of 20 students measured how many minutes each person spent practicing an instrument one evening, in minutes, using a timer. Write a context summary covering who, what, when, where, how measured, and the sample size. Answer: Who: 20 students in one class; What: minutes of instrument practice in one evening, in minutes; When: one evening; Where: at home; How: each student timed themselves with a timer; Sample size: 20. Check by matching each of the five context questions to a stated fact, then by rereading as a stranger to confirm nothing is missing. 2. Fifteen students recorded the number of text pages they read in one sitting, in pages, counted from a bookmark. Name the variable and its units. Answer: Variable: pages read in one sitting; Units: pages. Check by confirming the units match what was counted (pages, not minutes), then by rereading the variable statement as a stranger to confirm nothing is missing. 3. Quiz scores for nine students are 70, 72, 74, 75, 76, 78, 80, 82, and 20. Which measure of center and which measure of spread best describe the scores, and what are they? Answer: median 75, IQR 8 (Q1 = 71, Q3 = 79); the outlier 20 drags the mean to about 69.7, so median and IQR fit. 4. A plant's weekly growth in centimeters over eight weeks is 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, with no outliers. Which center and spread fit best, and what are they? Answer: mean 4 cm with MAD 1 cm (or range 4 cm); the data is symmetric, so the mean is appropriate. Six Minutes @SixMinuteClass: One technique, about six minutes.
