This is my cover of the Vampire Killer theme from Castlevania, made with the restrictions of Pentasound. Pentasound is a fictional retro-style sound system, I created. It uses subtractive synthesis, much like the Commodore 64's SID chip. A lot of the old computer and game console sound chips had various restrictions and methods of sound synthesis, which gave them character. I wanted to create my own sound chip (albeit fictional) and explore what could be done with it. These are more or less the exact specifications of the system: It has five sound channels, with one operator per channel. The first four can be either a Saw Wave or a 50% Square Wave. The fifth one can be either a 50% Square Wave or Noise. Each channel can be put through a Low-pass filter, with an adjustable level of Resonance. That's about it. It's a simple, yet relatively powerful setup. What do you think about the idea of fictional sound chips? Do you have ideas of your own? Share your thoughts in the comments bellow!
