The green hydrogen economy in Africa

Africa is a natural capital superpower with abundant renewable energy potential. The commercial production of green hydrogen on the continent has the potential to reduce emissions, unlock economic opportunities and create millions of jobs. According to the report, “Africa’s Green Energy Revolution: Hydrogen’s role in unlocking Africa’s untapped renewables,” Africa has the potential to produce 30-60 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of green hydrogen by 2050 while creating 3.7 million new jobs and boosting the continent's GDP by as much as $60 billion to $120 billion. Richard Kiplagat, Chair of the Advocacy Taskforce for the African Hydrogen Partnership, explores how Africa can harness its green hydrogen potential to leapfrog its people and economies into a new green industrial age.
