Simon was shocked to learn, on Saturday, that The Independent newspaper is considering no longer publishing a daily cryptic crossword. The Independent's crossword is one of the very best in the country - they have an excellent stable of setters and a great editor. With the boom in the popularity of mind sports/puzzles and a whole new generation of younger solvers finding their way to cryptic crosswords due to the success of minutecryptic (and even this channel), it seems such a shame. We're hoping that, if the managing editor of The Independent, Richard Best, finds out how much love there is for the puzzle, perhaps, he could be persuaded to reconsider any decision.
