Riding Into Istanbul for the First Time | From Black Sea Peace to City Chaos

From the peaceful sound of the sea to the horns, traffic and sheer energy of Istanbul — this was quite a day on my round-the-world motorcycle journey. I start with one of those rare moments where everything is completely still: no traffic, no voices, just the Black Sea. But Istanbul is my next destination, and getting there soon becomes rather more eventful. There are rough roads and trenches to negotiate, navigation to juggle, a quick stop to have Kairos’ chain tensioned and lubricated, and then my first taste of riding through Istanbul traffic. Before long I’m weaving through the city, making friends with the locals and — inevitably — discovering the apparently compulsory Istanbul use of the horn.
