The five aggregates (Sanskrit: skandhas) represent the sum of "all the worldly" things that are constantly afflicted by attachment, hostility, and ignorance. They are the components that make up our physical and mental existence, consisting of form, feeling, recognition, compositional factors, and consciousness. The text breaks down these five components as follows: Form (Matter): This is the physical aggregate. In the context of rebirth, it begins as the physical material (sperm and egg) in the womb into which consciousness enters. It is characterized by physical processes that are born, age, and die. Feeling: This aggregate experiences three types of contaminated feelings: happiness, suffering, and equanimity. All contaminated feelings of happiness eventually turn into suffering (the suffering of change), while feelings of equanimity represent the suffering that pervades all conditioned phenomena. Recognition (Perception): This is the mental aggregate responsible for identifying, discriminating, and grasping the specific characteristics of an object. Compositional Factors: This aggregate refers to the mental karma and compositional forces that engage the mind in virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral actions. It is responsible for imprinting and carrying karmic instincts. Consciousness: This is the illuminating intelligence that occupies itself with objects. It consists of both "causal consciousness" (where karmic latencies are imprinted) and "resultant consciousness" (which enters the womb at conception). Name and Form During the process of rebirth, the four mental aggregates (feeling, recognition, compositional factors, and consciousness) are grouped together as the "name link", while the physical matter is called the "form link". Samsara as the Inflicted Aggregates The aggregates are referred to as inflicted aggregates because their substantial cause arises from past delusions and karma. Because they are bound by these delusions, they act as the ultimate vessel for all suffering. Having to carry this continuous burden of contaminated, afflicted aggregates is the very definition of samsara. Deconstructing the Self The primary root of suffering is our instinctive grasping at these five perishable aggregates, wrongly viewing them as a solid, independent "I" or "self". Through analytical meditation (specifically the four-point analysis), practitioners are taught to realize that the "self" is neither identical to nor separate from the five aggregates. Realizing that the self cannot be found within or apart from these aggregates is the key to achieving the wisdom of emptiness.
