For six years, every Thursday morning, the phone behind the lunch counter at the Blue Spoon Diner on West 72nd Street rang at approximately eleven o'clock. The voice on the other end was always the same. The question was always the same. "This is Miles. Is the soup today the same as last week?" Gloria Haynes, who had been working the lunch counter for eleven years, always said yes. The soup was always chicken and rice on Thursdays. Then there was a pause. Then Miles Davis asked about her daughter. For six years, every Thursday, Miles Davis called a diner he was not going to visit that day, asked about a soup he was not going to order, and listened to Gloria tell him how Denise was doing — through the nursing school applications, the acceptance, the graduation, the first job at Bellevue. He never came in on a Thursday that he called. He never explained why he called. He never missed a Thursday for six years. The last call came in December 1987. It ended the way every other Thursday call had ended — except that at the very end, before he hung up, Miles Davis said something he had never said before. "Thank you for the soup." Gloria held the phone after the call ended. She understood that it was the last one. Four years later, a journalist asked her why she thought Miles Davis had called every Thursday for six years. She thought about it. Then she said: "I think he needed to know that the soup was the same. That some things stayed the same. And he needed to hear from somebody who was glad to hear from him but wasn't asking him for anything." She paused. "That was what Thursday was for." ───────────────────────────── ⏱ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 — March 1985: The call Gloria understood 02:10 — The Blue Spoon and how Miles started coming in 04:30 — How it began: two people and a coffee cup 06:20 — The exchanges that weren't conversations 08:15 — Denise and the nursing school applications 10:40 — Late 1980: The first Thursday call 12:30 — Why he never came in on Thursdays he called 14:15 — Six years.
