Roccascalegna is an Italian municipality with 1,017 inhabitants (as of 2024) in the province of Chieti in the Abruzzo region. The municipality lies approximately 50 kilometers south-southeast of Chieti. One cannot leave Abruzzo without visiting the castle of Roccascalegna, which seems to have sprung from a fairy tale. Legend has it that its name derives from "Rocca scale di legno," meaning "rock of wooden stairs." These stairs led from the village to the castle tower and were therefore immortalized in the town's coat of arms. In reality, however, the name originates with the Lombards and appears to mean "steep flank of a mountain." Indeed, the town is situated on the flank of Monte San Pancrazio in the province of Chieti, from which the castle, perched on a strategically important rocky spur, overlooks the village, the Vallone del Rio Secco valley, and the expansive Vallata del Sangro valley. It resembles a silent, imposing sentinel. The first mentions date back to the 12th century, but the foundation stone was probably laid in the 9th century by the monks of the Abbey of San Pancrazio (of which only the church in the cemetery remains) to control the arrival of "strangers" coming from both the sea and the mountains.
