Young people from Kerala are increasingly visible in political protests taking place in Delhi, particularly around the growing mobilisation associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
CJP has announced a major protest in Delhi on October 10, with several student organisations also joining the mobilisation.
This raises an important question:
How is this mobilisation taking place? Who is coordinating participants? How are travel, accommodation and local networks being organised?
Participating in a protest is a democratic right. Citizens have every right to criticise the government and oppose policies they disagree with.
But large-scale political mobilisation can also legitimately be examined: Who is organising it? What is the organisational structure? What are the sources of logistical support? And what are the political objectives?
The BJP has raised questions about the organisation and political strategy behind such protests, while CJP and allied student organisations present their movement as a democratic campaign focused on electoral transparency, the SIR exercise and accountability concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
So what is happening?
A spontaneous youth movement?
Or a carefully organized national political mobilization?
And what does the growing presence of young people from Kerala in Delhi protests tell us about the changing nature of Indian protest politics?
