Drive into northwest Arkansas and it looks like quiet Ozark countryside: oak ridges, limestone creeks, and long chicken houses along back roads. But within a half-hour drive are the headquarters of Walmart, Tyson Foods, and J.B. Hunt.
So how did a hilly, isolated stretch of the Ozarks, with no major port, no big river city, and no interstate for most of the twentieth century, become one of the most powerful business corridors in the United States?
In this video, we trace the answer from the ground up: thin karst soil that pushed farmers toward chickens instead of cotton, a trucking industry born from poor transportation, a small-town retailer that mastered logistics, and the "Vendorville" cluster of more than a thousand supplier offices that grew around it. We also look at how the region built its own highway and airport, and how rugged terrain became museums and mountain biking trails.
💬 Have you ever been to Bentonville or northwest Arkansas? Or did you never realize this corner of the country had this much reach? Let me know in the comments.
