Duolingo is the most popular language learning app in the world, and after one full year of using it every day, I quit it. In this Duolingo review I break down why Duolingo is bad for learning English, what it actually does well, and what helped me learn a language faster instead. If you have ever asked yourself "does Duolingo work" or "is Duolingo good", this video is my honest answer after one year.
In this video:
• How Duolingo was born, and who made it
• What changed in Duolingo since then — streaks, hearts, XP, leaderboards, Super Duolingo
• Why Duolingo is bad for learning English: translation drills instead of speaking, gamification instead of memory, no real conversation practice, no feedback on pronunciation
• Why I quit Duolingo
• What I tried after it, and what actually moved my English forward
I started using Duolingo because I wanted to learn English. I kept the streak alive for a whole year — daily lessons, XP, leagues, hearts. The honest answer is: yes, it helped a little. But not much. And in this video I explain exactly why.
The problem is not that Duolingo is a scam. The problem is how it teaches. You get good at recognising words instead of using them. The app trains you to protect your streak, not to remember vocabulary. You finish a course and you can still barely hold a conversation.
This is not a rant. Duolingo helped me build a daily habit, and I am grateful for that. But a habit is not fluency, and language learning needs more than an app.
If you are thinking about quitting Duolingo, or you are on a long streak and wondering whether to keep going — this video is for you.
I'm learning English in public and building this channel from zero at the same time. Subscribe if you want to follow that.
