This design is functional, rot-resistant, and has removable doors for easy harvesting. A single bin can work, but it's hard to get into a real rhythm — you end up with one never-ending pile that's hard to harvest. Cut your materials: (4) 4x4 supports at 36", (4) 2x4 supports at 36", and 20 of the fence pickets to 36" each (leave 7 pickets full-length). 2. Assemble the back: space two 4x4 posts 6 feet apart and attach the 7 full-length pickets, flush at the top, with 2" of spacing between each — except the last picket, which sits flush to create a bottom border that holds the finished compost in. 3. Assemble the center divider and side panels: sandwich 7 cut pickets between two pairs of 2x4s (spaced 36" apart) to build the center divider, then attach it to the back panel. Attach the two side panels the same way you built the back, using a 4x4 post spaced 36" from the back. 4. Build the removable doors: attach a permanent base picket to hold each door in place, then assemble each door from 2 vertical pickets (about a foot apart) and 5 horizontal pickets spaced 2" apart, leaving about 4" exposed on each side. Set the doors into the base and secure the top with 2 screws per door so they lift out for easy access. 5. Staple chicken wire around each bin (and a separate piece for each door) to help keep compost contained. This is an easy afternoon project, and once it's built you should get a steady supply of finished compost every few months.
