Adidas Power Soccer is a 1996 sports video game developed by the legendary British studio Psygnosis and released for the original PlayStation and Windows PC. Serving as a prominent early marketing crossover, the title was fully sponsored by the German sportswear giant Adidas and featured widespread in-game product placement, including prominent advertisements for their famous Predator football boots. What truly set the game apart from contemporaries like FIFA was its dual-mode engine: players could choose between a traditional, rule-abiding "Simulation" mode or a chaotic, fast-paced "Arcade" mode. In Arcade mode, standard football physics and fouls were thrown out the window in favour of a "power meter" that allowed for spectacular, illegal special moves, such as hyper-aggressive slide tackles, unblockable "flaming kicks," and massive goalkeepers who physically doubled in size to make a save. Backed by motion-captured player animations and energetic British commentary, the unique formula spawned a memorable late-90s trilogy including Adidas Power Soccer International 97 and Adidas Power Soccer 98.
