This walk through Shimokitazawa is divided into two parts. In Part 1, we explore the south side and trace how the neighborhood developed into one of Tokyo’s best-known centers of youth culture — from its concentration of vintage shops and long-established live-music scene to its distinctive curry culture. Compared with our last walk in Koenji, Shimokitazawa offers a different atmosphere and a different story, shaped by its own history, streets and small independent businesses. Natural street sounds remain at the center of the walk, with English captions and narration at key moments to explain the history and culture behind what you’re seeing.
