You are born in 1483 as a macehualli, a commoner whose life belongs to the chinampas, tribute, labor, and the needs of Tenochtitlan. From the telpochcalli to the battlefield, every step upward depends on taking captives alive—not simply killing enemies. This journey follows the ranks from telpochyahqui and yaoquizqui through cuextecatl, papalotl, Eagle and Jaguar Warrior, otomitl, cuachic, captain, and keeper of weapons. Each rank brings something different: cloth, land, public drinking rights, food, houses, or authority—and each demands more of your body and your reputation. The story moves through Moctezuma II’s accession in 1502 and ends on August 13, 1521, when Tenochtitlan falls and Cuauhtémoc is captured. After a lifetime spent climbing, you return to the canal where your life began and ask what the rank was really worth.
