Leaking steam boiler probe on your Sage or Breville espresso machine? This guide shows how I rebuild the older O-ring-style water-level probe by replacing its inner and outer seals.
Follow the removal of the small locking ring, careful handling of the insulator, fitting the inner O-ring and replacing the outer seal. This is a boiler water-level probe rebuild, not a steam-wand temperature sensor repair.
Possible symptoms and error codes
• Steam or moisture leaking through or around the probe
• Worn inner or outer O-ring
• Limescale deposits around the probe assembly
Error 20 / ER20 — Steam pump or high water-level probe fault
Error 21 / ER21 — Steam high-level probe short / low-level probe open
Error 32 / ER32 — Steam boiler leakage error
Code references: Oracle BES980 and Oracle Touch BES990. These codes describe detected conditions; they do not prove that a probe or seal is the failed part. A pump, blocked water path, drain leak or wiring fault may also need investigation. A physical leak may be present without a stored code.
Replacing O-rings addresses sealing problems; it does not guarantee that an electrical water-level fault will be resolved. Check that your probe uses the same serviceable design.
The small inner O-ring shown has the following dimensions:
Outer Diameter: 5 mm
Inner Diameter: 2 mm
Width: 1.5 mm

Always unplug the machine and let it cool completely before working on it. Check the repaired assembly for leaks after reassembly.
