The Fola Tinubu and Dorcas Adeyinka controversy raises a much bigger question than who is right or wrong.
What happens when someone receives life-changing help from a social-media community—and that help becomes connected to expectations of gratitude, loyalty and public support?
In this video, I use the Fola and Dorcas situation as a springboard to examine factionalism on social media, particularly the kind of group loyalty where people can inherit another person’s enemies simply because they belong to the same camp.
We’ll look at the difference between gratitude and allegiance, why receiving help doesn’t necessarily mean surrendering your independent judgment, how social-media factions can influence people’s opinions, and why adults should be able to support someone without automatically supporting every battle they fight.
Because there is an important question we should all ask before joining somebody else’s fight:
“What did this person personally do to me?”
You don’t inherit somebody else’s enemy.
This is not about declaring Fola Tinubu or Dorcas Adeyinka right or wrong. It is about examining the larger social dynamics surrounding their story—and what we can learn from them.
