한국인처럼 살아보기, 새로운 한국 관광 트렌드 Korea welcomed a record number of international tourists in the first half of this year. And the way people travel is changing, too. Instead of just visiting famous landmarks, more tourists want to eat, shop, and enjoy their free time like locals. What is it about everyday Korean life that has captured their interest? To discuss this trend, we’re joined by David Tizzard, Professor of Korean Studies at Seoul Women’s University. Hello Professor Tizzard! Q1. Professor, these days, more international tourists seem interested in experiencing everyday life like Koreans rather than just visiting famous tourist attractions. The way people explore Korea seems to have changed quite a bit, hasn’t it? Q2. From eating ramyeon by the Hangang River and scrubbing off dead skin at a jjimjilbang to cheering at a baseball game, things that are part of everyday life for Koreans can be special experiences for foreign visitors. Is there any aspect of everyday Korean culture that you’ve grown particularly fond of while living here? Q3. Convenience stores, Olive Young, Korea’s popular beauty retailer, and Daiso, known for its affordable everyday goods, have also become popular destinations for tourists. For Koreans, these are just places to shop for everyday essentials, so what makes them so appealing to international visitors? Q4. More recently, beauty experiences have expanded beyond cosmetics shopping to include hair styling, makeup, and nail services. Why are international tourists so interested in experiencing these Korean beauty services firsthand? Q5. There was a time when people dreamed of living like a Parisian or a New Yorker. Has living like a Korean become a dream for people around the world, too? Q6. If you were to recommend one day of living like a local in Korea to a foreign friend, what would you have them do? Thank you Professor Tizzard for your thoughtful recommendations and sharing your insights. Thank you Bella, see you next time.
