The Poddington Peas | The Catchy Theme Tune You Still Can't Get Out of Your Head

Down at the bottom of the garden, amongst the birds and the bees… sound familiar? 🟢🎵 Welcome back to Big Kids TV Podcast, where we unearth the retro shows that defined our childhoods. This time, we're diving into The Poddington Peas – the wonderfully pun‑filled BBC classic that introduced us to a whole community of anthropomorphic peas! Created by Paul Needs and Colin Wyatt of Cairnvale Productions, this charming series first aired on BBC One on 14 September 1989. It ran for 13 five‑minute episodes and was regularly repeated throughout the 90s and early 00s until 2002. Narrated by Neil Pearson (of Drop the Dead Donkey fame), with a ridiculously catchy theme tune composed by Geoff Stephens, the show followed the adventures of a town called Poddington – made up entirely of overturned flowerpots at the bottom of a garden. And the characters? Oh, the characters! With nearly 40 pea‑pun residents – from Hap‑Pea (the happy one in a red baseball cap), Dump‑Pea (the greedy one always eating), and Creep‑Pea (the mischievous villain with a long pointy nose), to Bump‑Pea (covered in bumps and plasters), Hip‑Pea (a 60s hippie with a guitar), and Snoop‑Pea (the Sherlock Holmes detective) – this show was a masterclass in wordplay.
