How do you build a highway through one of the world's busiest bays? Japan found an extraordinary answer: build part of it beneath the seabed. The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line is a massive transportation system connecting Kawasaki and Kisarazu across Tokyo Bay. Instead of relying entirely on a bridge, engineers combined an underwater tunnel, an artificial island, a ventilation tower, and a major offshore bridge into one continuous highway. But building it was anything but simple. Engineers had to excavate deep beneath the bay using enormous shield tunneling machines, control water and ground pressure, install thousands of massive concrete tunnel segments, construct artificial islands in open water, and assemble huge steel bridge structures offshore. At the center of the route sits Umihotaru, an artificial island where the underwater tunnel and bridge meet. Nearby, the Tower of Wind helps support the ventilation system hidden beneath the bay. In this documentary, we go inside the engineering behind one of Japan's most extraordinary infrastructure projects—from the first construction challenges to the completed highway carrying traffic beneath Tokyo Bay. This is the story of how Japan built a highway through the sea. 🏗️ WHAT YOU'LL SEE • How the underwater tunnel was excavated • Giant shield tunneling technology • How tunnel segments were installed • How engineers dealt with soft seabed conditions • Construction of Umihotaru artificial island • The massive Tower of Wind ventilation system • Offshore bridge foundation construction • Steel bridge assembly over Tokyo Bay • Tunnel safety and ventilation systems • Final testing and completion of the Aqua-Line Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line — Japan A unique combination of underwater tunnel, artificial island and offshore bridge connecting the Tokyo Bay region.
