Prince called it Paisley Park. In the suburb of Chanhassen, southwest of Minneapolis, the white studio complex he opened in 1987 for about $10 million covers around 65,000 square feet, with recording studios, a sound stage, a vault in the basement and an atrium with a painted sky. He lived there, he worked there, and he died there, and he left no will.
In this video, we go inside Paisley Park and follow the money behind it. From the basement on Russell Avenue in north Minneapolis where a teenage Prince rehearsed, to his first Warner Bros. deal at 19, First Avenue and Purple Rain. From the purple house on Lake Riley to the palace in the cornfield, the fight with Warner over his master recordings, the symbol and the word on his face, and the comeback: the Musicology tour, the Super Bowl in the rain and 21 nights in London.
Then the estate: no will, a vault drilled open, dozens of false claims, 67 gold bars, and a six-year fight in which his administrators valued his estate at $82.3 million while the IRS said $163.2 million, before a settlement at $156.4 million. Today, Paisley Park is a museum, the estate is split between his family's company and Primary Wave, and Purple Rain is heading to Broadway.
