The Mizzou University Singers perform Rosephanye Powell’s Kyrie in G Major, conducted by Dr. Brandon A. Boyd with Prof. Bomi Kim, piano.
Written for SATB divisi choir and piano, Powell’s setting of the traditional Latin Kyrie Eleison text is built around broad vocal lines, layered choral textures, and a piano part that functions as an active partner to the ensemble. The writing requires mature phrasing, control through divided passages, and careful attention to balance as the harmony expands and contracts around the repeated plea, “Lord, have mercy.”
For conductors exploring advanced contemporary sacred repertoire, Kyrie offers substantial musical material without losing the directness of the text. Its combination of divisi writing, sustained melodic shaping, rhythmic independence, and changing harmonic color makes it especially appropriate for accomplished high school, collegiate, community, church, and professional choirs.
The work was commissioned by the ACDA Endowment in memory of Raymond W. Brock and premiered by the Montgomery High School Madrigals, Heather Orr, conductor, at the 2025 ACDA National Convention in Dallas, Texas.
